In case you hadn’t heard, Allo Darlin’s Bill Botting is returning to Australia in March. So we’re sending him off in the best possible way – an almighty party on a Sunday night. Come join us at Moth Club on the 26th of February from 6pm for an evening of music, celebration and sadness. Bill’s asked an all star cast of indie heroes to come and perform alongside him on the night. We’ve announced the appearance of Tigercats, Darren Hayman, Simon Love, Emma Kupa and Moustache Of Insanity so far, but there are even more guests to be announced. Enderby’s Room – Heartaches

Heartaches is the second single from the debut Enderby’s Room album, and it’s out today! Clash Music described it as “unfolding gently, the quiet grace of Enderby’s Room seems to draw on the folk tradition while taking brave chances of its own”, and Austin Town Hall said it “has a subtle beauty that will overwhelm you”.

The latest album from Stanley Brinks is out! Joined by two of The Kaniks, appearing here as The Old Time Kaniks, Brinks has penned two albums worth of tales of love, loss and drink.

Introducing Enderby’s Room

I found some notes recently from when I was first setting up the label 6 or so years ago, listing some of the bands I’d love to release once I’d worked out what the hell starting a record label actually entailed. Tucked up near the top of that list was Enderby’s Room.

So, I’m really quite chuffed to say that today we’re releasing the debut single from Enderby’s Room. It’ll be followed up with a couple more digital singles and a proper 7″ in February, and a full album is on it’s way to manufacture now – expect that to be out in April.

Enderby’s Room is fiddle player Dan Mayfield, once from rural Lincolnshire, but he has now found home living in London. His folk tinged songs reflect on his traditional folk upbringing, which included playing fiddle for Morris dancing sides around the country. Mayfield has played fiddle for many artists including Daniel Johnston, Darren Hayman, The Wave Pictures and Allo Darlin.

Over the past ten years he has gently built up a collection of his own songs, which he performs with his band Enderby’s Room. The name comes from an Anthony Burgess character called Mr Enderby who composed his prose inside the toilet. The band’s make up has been constantly evolving; around 30 different individuals have been a part of Enderby’s Room over the last decade, before settling on the current 5 piece lineup.

Enderby’s Room’s sound features a Victorian pedal harmonium, together with French horn, double bass, ukulele, guitar and percussion.

Lakeside, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, is one of the first songs that Mayfield composed, taken from the perspective of someone longing to be with someone they can’t be with. There are themes of nature and listening which also feature throughout the rest of music on the forthcoming album. Mayfield is joined by Emma Winston (Deerful, Owl & Mouse) on vocals in this lamenting duet.

As well as Enderby’s Room, Mayfield set up School of Noise which encourages young people to be creative with sound, using unusual noise making and sound sculpting machines. This project has seen him take workshops to the Green Man and End of the Road festivals as well as the Southbank Centre, Museum of London, Great Ormond Street Hospital and primary schools around the country.

Stanley Brinks – aka André Herman Düne – returns with the new double album ‘Vieilles Caniques / Nouvelles Caniques’, the follow up to 2016’s Record Store Day Release ‘Turtle Dove’. Once again he is joined by the Norwegian folk collective The Kaniks, this time stripped back to a two piece of fiddle and banjo, ‘The Old Time Kaniks’.

This double album of modern day folk tales of love, loss and mischief was recorded during the same time period as ‘Turtle Dove’, on a remote island outside the small town of Egersund in south west Norway. Over the course of a week of midnight sun, midnight swims and midnight beers on their isolated rocky island, they lived and worked in the only building there, the now-unmanned mid 19th century Vibberodden
lighthouse.

Originally intended as two separate albums, the fact they were recorded on consecutive days, with the same band, it felt natural to present them as a double.
Thematically, apart from the titles – ‘Vieilles Caniques/Nouvelles Caniques’ (or ‘Old Kaniks/New Kaniks’ ) – there are some subtle differences between the two, a little more heartbreak and longing on the first, the second, lyrically a touch more content or resolved, something transitional in the life of SB maybe… though there’s plenty of songs about drinking on both too…!
It’s not unfeasible to imagine that the recording of ‘Old’, followed by an evening partying through the night in the lighthouse with André, transformed The Kaniks to the (bleary eyed/sore headed) ‘New’ the following morning!

Brinks is renowned for his unique anti-folk style: both playful and suggestive, insightful and entertaining. His mastery of storytelling, presented in both English and in French on these albums, brings us to the heart of the free-spirited world of Brinks’ life as a touring musician.
His fondness for calypso and the unusual provide the perfect foil to The Kaniks, whose folk instrumentation and country and bluegrass influences take this double album to a joyous place Brinks hasn’t been before in his extensive back catalogue.

Stanley Brinks was born in Paris, France, in 1973. He studied a bit of biology and worked as a nurse for a while. Half Swedish, half Moroccan, strongly inclined to travel the world, he soon began spending most of his life on the road and developed a strong relationship with New York. By the late 90s he’d become a full time singer-songwriter – André Herman Düne – as part of three piece indie-rock band, Herman Düne. Several albums and Peel sessions later and after a decade of touring Europe, mostly with American songwriters such as Jeffrey Lewis, Calvin Johnson and early Arcade Fire he settled in Berlin. The early carnival music of Trinidad became a passion, and in the early 21st century he became the unquestioned master of European calypso, changing his name to Stanley Brinks. Under this moniker he has recorded more than 100 albums, collaborated with the New York Antifolk scene on several occasions, recorded and toured with traditional Norwegian musicians, and played a lot with The Wave Pictures.

Transitions from Cosines out now

Cosines return with their new EP, “Transitions”. As well as being the missing link between the band’s debut LP and next year’s follow-up, the four tracks are all about change – with themes of starting over, moving on, making changes and reacting to unexpected events.

Opening track, Let’s Start It Over, is the most personal, building over five minutes to a classic pop crescendo – coming soon to a dancefloor near you. Dunbar was written in angry response to the news that Cosines’ spiritual home, The Buffalo Bar, was to shut, and received its live debut at one of the final shows there. The song pays tribute to the latest of many vital small music venues forced to close due to property development, London’s increasing gentrification and lack of arts support from government.

Transitions is out on 10″ black vinyl and as a download now.

We’ve been very excited to work with our new friends Math and Physics Club and our old friends at Matinee Recordings on this brand new compilation, gathering together 16 b-sides, rarities and unreleased treats from the band, all on vinyl for the very first time. Pre-orders have been brisk so we’ve only a handful of copies of this left, so don’t hang around if you’re keen to get a copy.
If you’re a MAPC fan in the USA and are hankering over a copy of the gatefold vinyl, ask your local record store to order you a copy in – RedEye are distributing it outside Europe so point them in the right direction! Petito is Palomica’s second full length album, and their first with Fika Recordings. Since 2013’s “Sometimes It’s A Struggle”, Nicol Parkinson has played with co-existing unrelated sounds, bringing tape manipulation, ambient recordings and electronic drones to his delicate pop songs. It was partially recorded in his childhood bedroom outside Brighton, with his childhood cats poking around, and finished in Bristol in late 2015 with a different cat poking around.

Petito is full of incidental outside sounds alongside tumbling words and occasional guitar flourishes: sometimes melodic, sometimes cacophonic. For fans of Real Estate, Belle & Sebastian and Tenniscoats.
